Azure Key Vault is a foundational security service in the Microsoft cloud, responsible for centralized management of cryptographic keys, secrets, and certificates used by Microsoft products and Azure customers. The service enables customers to encrypt data at rest, securely store and manage credentials, and provision and automatically rotate TLS certificates across their cloud workloads. Operating at global cloud scale with 99.99% availability, Azure Key Vault is part of the Identity division within Microsoft Security and plays a critical role in maintaining customer trust in Microsoft’s cloud platform. The team builds and operates highly reliable, secure, and diagnosable distributed systems that protect some of the most sensitive data hosted in Azure. We are looking for a Software Engineer who is motivated to work on security‑critical cloud infrastructure, design and build resilient distributed systems, and take ownership of features from design through production. Engineers on this team are expected to demonstrate a strong growth mindset, collaborate effectively across teams, and apply disciplined engineering practices to deliver reliable, secure services at scale. Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain reliable, scalable, and secure distributed systems that form the core security foundation of Azure.
- Develop and maintain test strategies that include unit, integration, and security testing to validate behavior and prevent regression.
- Build testable code and improve existing test coverage, reliability, and execution speed.
- Apply secure‑by‑design principles, least‑privilege access patterns, and defensive coding practices to protect customer data and platform integrity.
- Write high‑quality, maintainable, and extensible code using modern engineering best practices.
- Participate in architectural and design discussions, evaluate trade‑offs, and contribute to design documents and technical proposals.
- Take ownership of features through deployment and ongoing production support, including participation in on‑call rotations.
- Leverage AI‑assisted development tools responsibly, reviewing and validating all generated outputs to ensure correctness, security, and compliance.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
